Personal History: I was born and raised in Campbell River, BC where I was exposed to a musical life from a very young age. My experiences of taking piano lessons, singing in choirs, playing in school bands and performing in musicals have all helped me develop a love for music. After high school, I moved to Edmonton, Alberta to pursue a career in music. While studying piano at Grant MacEwan University, I performed regularly and was surrounded by many talented musicians that had a positive influence on my music. After completing my diploma, I found myself looking for a more meaningful use for my music. Moving back to the west coast and completing the Music Therapy Program at Capilano University helped me find this meaning.
I am currently loving life in North Vancouver where I enjoy playing music for myself, practicing yoga, running, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
Professional History: I recently completed a 1000 hour internship at B.C. Children’ Hospital where I worked with children and youth in the oncology in-patient unit. With these clients, I used a variety of musical interventions including musical exploration, musical games, improvisation, music skill building, songwriting and relaxation. Interventions were used to promote healthy coping mechanisms during hospitalization and were selected to serve the client’s immediate needs.
Throughout my education, I was fortunate to experience working with many different populations. I had the opportunity to work with seniors, youth with developmental disabilities and at-risk women who were either pregnant or had recently given birth. Having recently graduated, I am looking forward to my future career as a Music Therapist and the opportunity to share my love of music with others.
Work Philosophy: Music has the ability to facilitate a connection. My personal style of music therapy is client-centered because I focus strongly on the individual needs of clients and their families. I am passionate about working with people and helping to improve their overall well-being with my music.
Personal Life Philosophy: As a person who sets high standards for herself I try to maintain a balance between having everything under control and embracing my inner spontaneity. I strive to remain in the present and focus on the beauty that each day has to offer. Life is a gift.
